The Colour of Absence #12

EXPLORATORY DRAWINGS

The Colour of Absence is a collection of exploratory drawings on hand torn paper. The decorative frames are used as a device where I am able to play around with both formal and playful elements within the work. Here the framing is an integral part of the story.

In the making of this work, source material was taken from magazines, historical books and portraiture along with family photographs. Some images are purely from my imagination. I took inspiration from the portrait Girl with a pearl earring by Vermeer. Interestingly, the girl in the portrait really didn’t exist and is believed to be a construction or painted amalgam of various study drawings. Vermeer may well have found this way of working to be extremely useful when there was no availability of a life model to call upon.
