I am interested in the politics of lace.
This series of work on paper has been informed by family archives set against colonial histories. Taking inspiration from a collection of lace pieces gifted to me from my mother, comprising her black lace mourning veil along with a drawn thread embroidered linen bed cover which my maternal grandmother made for her wedding trousseau. It is intriguing, such remnants are often overlooked and yet they are used to mark significant moments in our life.
Lace making has long been the domain of women.
Historically lace holds many connections that relate to gender, identity, sensuality and power. Whilst the delicate patterns suggest an idyllic utopia used to display taste and wealth. I am interested in exploring what lies beneath. Memory and emotional fragility caught within the threads.
I seek to elevate those hidden histories of forgotten women.
These drawings are a means of perpetuating memory, a testimony to the past and a legacy for the future.
